A musical symphony to mark the culmination of 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru​

​Soulful music, good friends and grassy expanse; isn’t that what winters should be all about. To get you grooving right into the season, Qawaal Ustad Chand Afzal, playback singer Sonu Nigam and Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam will perform on November 14, 2015, at Nehru Park to mark the culmination of 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Jawaharlal Nehru. He loved one, he loved all; this event celebrates inclusion of music lovers from all walks of life.




Set to begin just when the sun goes down at 6 pm, the musical treat will begin with chants from students at the Varanasi-based

Panini Kanya Mahavidyalaya, which follows the gurukul system to instruct girls in the Vedas, Sanskrit grammar, Indian philosophy, in addition to classical music. This will be followed by spell-binding songs by Padma Shri awardee and vocalist​ ​
Aruna Sairam. She is one of those rare talents whose repertoire includes varying classical, semi-classical and folk music forms and genres in several languages. Her music goes beyond geographic borders and cultural contexts.

Being the land of Nizammuddin Auliya, to carry on the sufi heritage we will have a Qawaal haunting us just as the mists of winter hit us.

Ustad Chand Afzal, who has performed at the Rashtrapathi Bhawan, will mesmerize the audience with his qawwals with his mellifluous voice. To cap the lovely evening,​

Nigam will take the music lovers of Delhi on a trip down memory lane while singing old melodies. Giving the term ‘old is gold’ a stirring meaning, Sonu Nigam’s expressive voice would help transport us to an era when the icon Jawahar Lal Nehru lived. He hopes to help us remember the icon whose impressions are etched in our memory forever.

This being an evening of celebration will commemorate the architect of the modern Indian state, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of Independent India. Organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, the event, the evening will cut across all age groups and connect young and old alike to pay tribute to this charismatic statesman.

PANINI KANYA MAHAVIDYALAYA


Following in the steps of the ancient Gurukul tradition, Varanasi-based Panini Kanya Mahavidyalaya is a unique institution that instructs girls in the Vedas, Vedangas, Sanskrit grammar and Indian philosophy. Besides teaching them regular subjects like English and Mathematics, the Vidyalaya imparts to the girls a high-level learning classical music.

                                                                             

ARUNA SAIRAM



Aruna Sairam has created and performed a dazzling range of South Indian classical music repertoire in varied spaces from intimate chamber settings and salon music concerts to large auditoria. (The Padma Shri is one of India’s civilian honors presented in recognition of distinguished contributions to Indian culture and society.) Her repertoire includes varying classical, semi-classical and folk music forms and genres in several languages. Her music has also provided sound for dance, film and television. By continuously interacting with international musicians, Aruna communicates through music that goes beyond geographic borders, regional contexts and cultural mores. She uses melody as a language of basic and refined human expression.

                                                                             

 USTAD CHAND AFZAL



Renowned qawwal, Chand Afzal and his brothers first trained under the guidance of their illustrious father, Ustad Zafar Hussain Sahib. At present they are receiving further training with Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan Sahib, the Khalifa of Delhi Gharanna. Chand Afzal and his brothers have been regularly presenting qawwali programmes on radio and televisions. They have released several cassettes and CDs of Sufiana kalaam, Gurbani and Kirtan and have participated in a number of leading music festivals in India and abroad.

Sonu Nigam is universally acclaimed as finest Indian singer and the golden voice of Indi pop but he has proved time and again that he is a complete musician and an institution in himself with extra-ordinary talent and a voice to die for. He is a student of music, with a zeal to surpass his own targets and a performer par excellence. Today he is a superstar, an icon to millions of music lovers across the globe. He is already a legend, and the journey has just begun!
