The Company Theatre was established in 1993 in New Delhi and after a very successful run of its theatre performances all over India and abroad, it shifted base to Mumbai 15 years back. Today, it celebrates its 20 years. 20 solid years, full of theatre performances, international collaborations, invitation to performances from abroad, theatre festivals, international seminars and conferences concerning performance art and culture, theatre architecture, exploration of alternative performance spaces, adult and children’s theatre workshops, theatre in education and much more.
The Company Theatre, in this period, experimented as much in form as it did with content in its creative work. It bent rules, walked on the edge and won the hearts of critics and audiences alike all over India and abroad. Today, it could is extremely proud to be one of the most prolific and self sufficient theatre companies in India.
The Company Theatre’s plays include:
The Chairs
The Blue Mug
Piya Behrupiya (Twelfth Night)
Noises Off
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
Creeps
Lady with Lapdog
Numbers in the Dark
Unselfed
Hair
Seduction of Lady Anne (Richard III)
The Company Theatre has also collaborated with Cinematograph (Rajat Kapoor’s company) to make performances like Hamlet- The Clown Prince & Nothing Like Lear. Lastly, The Company Theatre, has finally been able to realise its dream of creating a theatre village- an International Residency for Theatre Research & Performance in Kamshet (country-side of Maharashtra). It took 15 years of struggle, public donations and funding, fund raiser through an art exhibition and sale, and year after year of stubborn and hard work to put this theatre laboratory up and running in March 2012. Today, a lot of theatre groups from Mumbai enjoy creating their productions in this space.
