The Delhi union of journalists welcomes the stand taken by the Editors Guild of India condemning "the blatant acts of intimidation and threats to Siddharth Varadarajan”, by members of the ABVP in Allahabad University a few days back.
The DUJ, it may be recalled, had also condemned this attack and an attack on another journalist in Ahmedabad the next day and called for protests by the entire journalist fraternity.
Given the increasing number of such attacks against the background of the rising intolerance in the country, the DUJ demands that the Press Council of India should intervene and immediately initiate action, so that persons guilty of such crimes do not go scot free and unchallenged.
The DUJ also feels that journalists and working editors should unitedly fight back such attacks on the freedom of press. Editors should also join forces with journalists and press workers on issues such as denial of proper wages to journalist and press workers, pensions, the bondage of contracts etc. which also tend to act as an infringement on freedom of the press.
